PANTHER TRACK & FIELD — SCHOOL RECORD ALERT
FABIAN WITTNER (8th GRADER) BREAKS THE MILE SCHOOL RECORD
Fabian ran the 1600m(mile) in 5:18, breaking a 20-year-old school record surpassing the previous record of 5:27 back by Josh Chessmore in 2006 by 9 seconds. It came from one of those races where everything unfolded a little differently than expected.
He started back in 16th place, and early on he didn’t force anything. He let the race come to him, and started picking people off, one by one, trusting what he felt instead of reacting to everything happening around him. That’s kind of his thing right now: fast. faster. fastest.
Fabian is fun to watch because it doesn’t feel like he is just surviving a race, it looks like he’s discovering it in real time.
He reads situations, looks for openings, and when they appear, he goes for them. He sees things most runners NEVER see. Most runners hesitate and go around on the right side. Fabian slipped between two runners with 600m to go, something that takes timing, confidence, and a feel for space that not many athletes—even at the collegiate and professional level—are willing to even attempt.
Lap splits: 1:22, 1:20, 1:19, and a DEADLY last lap of 1:17. He finished in 7th place in the Varsity 1600m Division.
Fabian is the kind of athlete who reflects after races, talking through moments where he could’ve gone sooner. He also helps teammates with advice like pushing off the ground through the midfoot, and his own running style matches that: smooth, quick, efficient strides.
He also shows great sportsmanship, always high-fiving EVERY competitor at the finish line.
From a 5:45 race time just one race prior to 5:18 and a school record, it looks like there’s still a lot left in the tank.
Breaking high school records when you’re not even in high school yet…..not a bad start.
CONGRATULATIONS FABIAN! The Cass-Lake Bena community is so proud of you!
